Mechanical Engineering Recruitment Day

Wednesday 16 October

RACE engineersThe United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority is at the forefront of delivering sustainable fusion energy. Work currently being undertaken by UKAEA at Culham Centre for Fusion Energy is moving away from scientific research to engineering delivery. Mechanical Engineers are at the heart of this work and pushing technological boundaries to enable this clean and safe form of energy to be realised.

We are hosting a recruitment day at our site in Culham, Oxfordshire on Wednesday 16 October, to invite talented Mechanical Engineers to meet with some of our hiring managers and learn more about the opportunities available.

The day will involve a presentation about UKAEA, a tour of some of our facilities, as well as a 15 minute interview slot where you will speak with hiring managers to discuss your skills and experience.

Within UKAEA's Culham site, Mechanical Engineers and engineers in related disciplines work on modifications and improvements to JET (the world's largest and most powerful fusion research facility) and MAST Upgrade (the UK's fusion experiment). They also work on projects for the National Fusion Technology Platform and for STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production).

Mechanical Engineers also work on Remote Handling robotics projects for RACE. RACE is UKAEA's centre for Remote Applications in Challenging Environments. The department designs and develops solutions that make it possible to carry out tasks in hazardous and extreme environments.

Off-site, the Central Engineering department is also actively supporting the development of the next generation of fusion research reactors, such as ITER in Cadarache in the south of France, and the DEMO project – the fusion power plant demonstration facility planned to be online by 2050. Other projects employing fusion-related technology such as the European Spallation Source in Lund, Sweden are also supported by UKAEA.

We offer a varied workload across all these facilities and more. We currently have vacancies at all levels in the following disciplines:

  • Development Engineers
  • Engineering Analysts – structural, thermal, electromagnetic
  • Mechanical Design Engineers
  • Mechanical Engineering Designers
  • Manufacturing Engineers
  • Nuclear Design Engineers
  • Systems Engineers
  • Safety Case Engineers
  • Process Engineers
  • Maintenance Engineers
  • Technical Configuration Engineers
  • Robotics Engineers
