About us

Visit CCFE

We are keen to encourage as many people as possible to view the fusion research facilities at Culham Centre for Fusion Energy. Our policy for visits is given below.

School, College and University visits

School visitOur current School Visit Days are fully booked, to join our schools mailing list to hear about cancellations and future events, please visit: http://eepurl.com/doZTwH

For UK schools we run a series of visit days aimed at A-level Physics or equivalent students to come and learn about nuclear fusion and the research happening at Culham. These visits consist of an introductory talk followed by a tour of our JET facility and last around 2.5 hours.

There are several start times for these visits: 09:45, 11:45 and 13:45.

For Universities and non-UK schools we are able to offer visits during working weekdays. Presentations and tours are tailored to the age group concerned, and a typical visit lasts two to three hours (i.e. a whole morning or afternoon). These visits are offered to groups of between 10 and 30.

We also offer, subject to availability,visits by scientists to give talks and hands-on demonstrations at primary or secondary schools.

To request a school visit or ask for more details, please email education@ukaea.uk.

Open Evenings and Open Days

Our Open Evenings and Public Open Days are free of charge and give members of the public the opportunity to see the JET and MAST experiments and meet some of the scientists and engineers who work in Fusion research (Please note: some areas may not fully accessible during the visit due to the machines being in operation).

The Open Evenings are usually held on a Wednesday evening up to six times a year, starting at 6.30pm and include an introductory talk and tours of the MAST and JET experimental facilities (cameras are welcome), usually finishing around 9.30pm.

The Public Open Days are held on two Saturdays each year, usually in May and November and you can choose to attend the Morning tour (9.30am – 12.30pm) or the Afternoon tour (1.30pm – 4.30pm) with a similar programme of talk and tours.

Please note:

  • Unfortunately children under the age of 14 years are unable to attend these events due to Health & Safety Restrictions;
  • There will be a significant amount of walking and standing during the tours;
  • Visitors with a pacemaker or any other medical implant may not be able to access certain areas.
